Overview

I have taught at university level for most of my academic career at Uppsala University (Sweden) and at BI Norwegian Business School, where I have taught continuously since 2021. My teaching spans introductory bachelor courses to master’s level, PhD-level guest teaching and faculty development, with cohorts from a handful of students to over 200.

Between 2022 and 2026 I designed or co-designed nine course syllabi at BI.

Earlier teaching

• Uppsala University (2015–2020): Database Design I (teaching assistant, lecturer, and from 2017 to 2019 course responsible and sole lecturer for one of the two autumn instances, with about 200 students each year); supervision in Independent Project in Sociotechnical Systems Engineering; guest lecture in the PhD course Sequential Monte Carlo Methods.

Teaching development work

• Data Analysis with Python & SQL: an open interactive textbook covering Python essentials, Pandas, and databases and SQL. All code runs directly in the browser, with no installation needed. Its Explain feature lets students step through the execution of Python code themselves.
• SQL Explorer: a web application for interactive SQL learning, with a personal database sandbox for every student, automatic feedback, and a real-time teacher dashboard. In continuous use since 2016 at Uppsala University and BI, also by colleagues in their own courses; redesigned in 2024 with funding from BI’s Future Program Delivery initiative.

Pedagogical Innovation Award 2024, BI Norwegian Business School

By developing a digital tool where students can actively take part in their own learning, and constantly get feedback on their own performance, they have embraced both the active learning perspective and student-centred learning. Pedagogical Award 2017, Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students

Uppsala Union of Engineering and Science Students (UTN)’s Pedagogical Award 2017. I am one of only three doctoral candidates to have received this award; all other recipients have been members of faculty.

För att tilldelas Uppsala teknolog- och naturvetarkårs peadagogiska pris bör den nominerade visa stort intresse och goda kunskaper inom pedagogisk utveckling. Det kan i sin tur innebära innovativa utbildningsmetoder, engagemang och intresse för sina studenters lärande, struktur i kursupplägget och relevant kursinnehåll som förankras i arbetslivet.

“Jan Kudlicka är en helt otroligt engagerad och pedagogiskt begåvad lärare som behöver all vår uppskattning och tacksamhet” skriver en student i sin nominering. Prisade ord som dessa ges sällan utan motivering och därmed har Jan Kudlicka dragit till sig UTNs uppmärksamhet.

Jans enorma energi och engagemang har både inspirerat studenterna till att vilja lära sig, medverka i utbildningen och inse relevansen i de kurser de läst med Jan.

Han sätter upp olika typer av lärande anpassade för att nå ut till alla sina studenter och han ger sig inte förrän han har lyckats ge svar på deras frågor.

Genom att vara lyhörd och flexibel har han även lyckats anpassa sina kursnivån efter studenternas förkunskaper samt gett kursprojekten relevant förankring i verkligheten.

Jan har en enorm viljestyrka att göra sitt bästa och med ovanstående motiveringen tilldelas Jan Kudlicka Uppsala teknolog- och naturvetarkars pedagogiska pris 2017.

To receive UTN’s Pedagogical Award, the nominee should show a great interest in and good knowledge within educational development. This, in turn, can mean innovative educational methods, commitment and interest in students’ learning, structure of the courses and relevant course content related to the working life.

“Jan Kudlicka is an incredibly dedicated and educationally talented teacher who needs all our appreciation and gratitude,” writes a student in the nomination. Praising words like these are seldom given without justification and thus Jan Kudlicka has attracted the attention of UTN.

Jan’s immense energy and dedication have both inspired the students to want to learn, participate in the education and realize the relevance of the courses they took with Jan.

He uses different types of learning adapted to reach all his students, and he does not give up until he has been able to answer their questions.

By being responsive and flexible, he has also managed to adapt the level of his courses to the students’ prior knowledge and designed the course projects that are relevant to the real world.

Jan has tremendous willpower to do the best and with this motivation Jan Kudlicka receives UTN’s Pedagogical Award 2017.
